The Scottish Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) course equips participants with the essential skills and knowledge to provide immediate support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. This comprehensive training spans a minimum of 12 hours, ideally delivered over two consecutive days but can be spread across up to six weeks. Each session is a minimum of two hours, ensuring participants have ample time to engage with the course content. The SMHFA course covers a broad range of mental health-related topics, including guidance on how to act as a Mental Health First Aider, understanding depression and anxiety, and learning how to offer first aid to individuals experiencing these conditions. Participants will explore the impact of alcohol and drugs on mental health, gain an introduction to suicide intervention, and develop listening skills crucial for supporting those in distress. The course also addresses attitudes towards mental health, equalities, and the importance of the recovery message. Additionally, participants will learn how to offer first aid to someone experiencing a psychotic episode. By the end of the course, participants will be well-equipped to confidently support individuals facing mental health challenges in a variety of settings, offering critical early intervention and fostering recovery.
